Privacy Policy

Snippet shows what you copy on your Mac, so it handles some of the most personal data there is. It keeps all of it on your Mac, without an account, analytics or tracking. The developer never receives any of your data. This policy explains what the app does with it and why.
In short
| What | Where it goes | Can the developer see it? |
|---|---|---|
| What you copy (text, images, colours, links, files) | Stored only on your Mac | No |
| Text recognised in images, image descriptions | Worked out and stored on your Mac | No |
| Copied links | macOS loads the linked page for its preview | No |
| Settings, locks and labels | Only on your Mac | No |
Who is responsible
Snippet is developed by Marco Lüthi, the controller responsible for data processing under the Swiss Federal Act on Data Protection (FADP) and, where applicable, the EU General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR).

What you copy
While recording is on, Snippet reads each new item on your Mac's clipboard, whatever app you copied it in, and keeps a copy of it so you can see and paste it again: the text, rich text, image, colour, link or file reference, the name of the app you copied it from, the time, and a small preview. It stores this in its own storage inside the app's sandbox on your Mac. It keeps the latest items up to the number you set (50 by default) and deletes older ones automatically, except items you lock. You can delete single items, or all of them with Clear History in the menu bar.
Snippet records whatever you copy, including sensitive text such as a password you copy by hand. To keep something out of Snippet, pause recording first (⌘⌥⇧V by default, or Pause Recording in the menu bar), or delete the item afterwards.
Recognition on your Mac
So you can search for them, Snippet recognises text in copied images and works out a short description of what a photo shows, using Apple's Vision and Natural Language frameworks. This happens entirely on your Mac, and the results are stored with the item.
Link previews
When you copy a link, Snippet asks macOS (Apple's LinkPresentation framework) to fetch the linked page's title, icon and preview image, the same way Messages or Mail do. Your Mac then connects to that website directly, which sees the usual details of a web request, such as your IP address. The preview is kept on your Mac. Snippet makes no other internet connections.
Files
When you copy files, Snippet keeps a reference to them and shows a preview. To preview files copied from your Downloads folder, it has read-only access to that folder, granted by macOS through the app sandbox. It doesn't look at any other files.
Settings
Your settings, keyboard shortcuts, locks and colour labels are stored on your Mac. If you turn on Launch at Login, macOS keeps that setting in System Settings → General → Login Items.
Purchase
Snippet is sold on the Mac App Store. Apple handles the purchase under its own privacy policy. The developer receives only the anonymous sales reports Apple provides to every developer.
Legal basis
Where the GDPR applies, the processing described above is necessary to provide the features you use (Art. 6(1)(b) GDPR). Under the Swiss FADP, we process personal data only as described here and in line with its principles. Everything Snippet stores stays on your Mac and is under your control.
What Snippet does not do
- No account, sign-up or login.
- No advertising, analytics or crash reporting.
- No sending of your copies, or anything about them, to the developer or anyone else.
- No tracking across apps or websites, and no selling or sharing of data.
This website
This website is a static site without cookies, analytics or tracking. Fonts are served from this website itself, so your browser does not contact third-party font services. When you visit a page, the hosting provider Vercel Inc. (based in the United States, with data centres worldwide) automatically records technical access data in server logs: your IP address, date and time, the requested page, referrer and browser type. This is needed to deliver the site and keep it secure (legitimate interest, Art. 6(1)(f) GDPR). The logs are deleted after a short period. Links to the App Store take you to Apple, where Apple's privacy policy applies.
Your rights
You have the right to request access to your personal data and to have it corrected or deleted, to object to or restrict processing, and to data portability. Because the apps store your data on your device and do not identify you, the developer usually holds no personal data about you. Most of it you can delete yourself by deleting the app.
To exercise your rights, email hi@luthi-mar.co. You can also lodge a complaint with a supervisory authority: in Switzerland the Federal Data Protection and Information Commissioner (FDPIC), in the EU the data protection authority of your country.
International transfers
Apple may process data in the United States and other countries. Apple describes the safeguards it uses for these transfers, such as the Data Privacy Framework and standard contractual clauses, in its privacy policy. This website is hosted by Vercel Inc., based in the United States; its server logs are transferred under the same kind of safeguards.
Children
Snippet is not directed at children and does not knowingly collect data from them.
Changes to this policy
If the app starts handling data differently, this page will be updated before the change ships, and the date at the top will change.
