Troubleshooting
It says “Not a word”, but it is one
Scramble checks words against the English dictionary built into the app, so every player gets the same answer. Names and abbreviations don't count. If a common word is missing, email it to us and it may be added in an update.
A librarian won't accept my word
Each floor librarian has a rule, shown before the chapter starts and at the top of the screen while you play. For example the Critic only takes words of 5 or more letters, and the Shusher allows at most 2 vowels.
Battles, duels or leaderboards don't load
They need Game Center. Check that you are signed in under Settings → Game Center and that your device is online. If Find Opponent says no opponent was found, nobody else was looking right then: try again, invite a friend, or practise against Wren, which works offline. Single-player modes work without Game Center.
I bought the Full Library, but the wings are still locked
Each wing still opens when you clear the one before it, starting with the Main Hall. If the wings show as not purchased, for example on a new device, tap Restore next to the Full Library in New Run. Restoring uses the same Apple Account you bought it with.
I already played today's Daily Scramble
The Daily Scramble gives everyone the same letters and one try per day. A new board arrives at midnight UTC.
Frequently asked questions
What kind of game is Scramble?
A word-building roguelike. You spell words from nine letter tiles to reach a target score before your words run out, then climb the library floor by floor. Every run lends you different books, so every run plays differently.
How does scoring work?
Every word length has base points and Flourish. Each letter adds its points, and rare letters are worth more. Points times Flourish is your score. Decorated tiles and borrowed tomes add points, Flourish or multipliers.
What are tomes and catalog cards?
After each chapter you borrow a book at the Circulation Desk. Tomes change how your words score, for example more Flourish for vowels or double for long words. Catalog cards level up a word length for the rest of the run. The first book after each chapter is free. Borrowed books have due dates: renew your favourites with XP or return them.
Who are the librarians?
Every floor ends with a librarian who guards their shelf with a strange rule, like one word only or no redraws. The rule is shown before you begin, so you can plan. There are 16 of them, and you can meet them all in the Who's Who register.
What is a Word Battle?
A live 1v1 through Game Center. You both get the same nine letters and 30 seconds a round to lock in a word. Both words fire at once and tear pages from the other's book, and the longer word wins the clash. Special tiles double the damage, burn, blot a letter, heal or shield. After 8 rounds, whoever has more pages left wins. You can also practise against Wren.
Is Scramble free?
The Main Hall, endless mode, the Daily Scramble, Time Trial, battles and duels are all free. One in-app purchase, the Full Library, unlocks the other four wings, each with a tome you won't find anywhere else. You still open each wing by clearing the one before it.
Which words count?
Scramble's words come from the English dictionary, with US and UK spellings. It's built into the app, so every iPhone, and both players in a battle, agree on what's a word.
Can I play offline?
Yes. Runs, the Daily Scramble, Time Trial and practice battles against Wren work offline. Live battles, duels, leaderboards and achievements use Game Center and need a connection.
Does it save my run?
Yes, runs save automatically, so you can close the app and pick up where you left off.
Does it work on iPad?
Yes, Scramble runs on iPhone and iPad with iOS 18.2 or later.
